Yes you can. From first hand experience I applied for and received the full maternity allowance as a self-employed Foot health practitioner, and it was pretty easy to apply for.
The Gov.uk website states that you can receive maternity allowance if you are self employed, although there is a criteria on how much you will get such as how many contributions of Class 2 National Insurance you have made as a self employed person.
If you’ve not paid any, you’ll get the minimum of £27 a week. So you still get a little but not much!
If you’ve paid, the amount is dependent on how much you have contributed to the Class 2 National Insurance In the 66 weeks (15 ½ months) before your baby is born. The most you can get is £156.66 a week for 39 weeks.
*Something to note, If you are just starting out, your profit may be low to start with so you may not need to pay Class 2 NI. When submitting your tax returns, you will get the option to pay voluntary class 2 NI. By paying it voluntarily, this contributes towards your state pension, as well as maternity pay in the future if you ever need it.
How to apply for maternity allowance?
When I applied it was pretty easy, by going onto the gov.uk website and following the prompts.
When you become 26 weeks pregnant you need to give information about your job. You’ll also need either a Letter from your GP, Matb1 form to confirm your baby's due date, or your baby’s birth certificate if the baby is born already.
